As if Rihanna and Justin Bieber needed another chart to conquer, Billboard has given them one. The magazine has just launched the Social 50 chart, which ranks the most active artists on the world’s leading social-networking sites, and the two pop juggernauts have landed at the top of the tally.

Rihanna and Bieber place first and second on the list, respectively, followed by Eminem, Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj. Filling out the top 10 are the Black Eyed Peas (#6), Katy Perry (#7), Ke$ha (#8), Linkin Park (#9) and Shakira (#10). Other artists who made the list include Taylor Swift, Usher, Lil Wayne, Kanye West and Paramore.

“We continue to adapt the way we chart the changing landscape of music,” Billboard editorial director Bill Werde said about the new chart. “The Social 50 is yet another step in the evolution of Billboard and an important response to our changing times.”

For those wondering how the magazine came up with the list, here’s the science: Social music-tracking service Next Big Sound collects data from the MySpace, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and iLike websites and tallies artists’ popularity using a formula blending their weekly additions of friends, fans and followers. The online behavior of these websites’ users and the number of artist page views and song plays they rack up are among the data used to determine the rankings.

“The Social 50 provides a weekly snapshot of the artists with whom music fans engage with the most in the social arena, which in today’s world is a significant validation of their investment in an act,” Billboard director of charts Silvio Pietroluongo explained. “The chart is a logical complement to Billboard‘s other popularity rankings.”

“The volume of online activity that top artists now receive is too big to ignore,” Next Big Sound CEO Alex White said. “We are thrilled that social music activity now receives the same emphasis as the music charts for which Billboard is synonymous.”

The Social 50 will be published each week in Billboard, and also will be available on Billboard.com and Billboard.biz.

NEW YORK — Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp warmed up the red carpet outside the Ziegfeld Theater in chilly New York City Monday night for the premiere of their sexy new flick, “The Tourist.” The duo was joined by co-star Paul Bettany, as well as Jolie’s hunky beau, Brad Pitt, and Bettany’s wife, actress Jennifer Connolly.

“It was wonderful,” Jolie, dressed in a creamy Atelier Versace gown, gushed to reporters about working with Depp on the flick. “He’s as wonderful as you expect him to be. He feels like he’s of a different decade. He’s extraordinarily creative and extraordinarily kind. There’s no one else like him.”

Jolie said that she was also drawn to the project by her character’s feminine wiles as well as the opportunity to work with Depp. “I liked that she was a real lady, a real European lady, and I’ve never played that before. I thought it was a challenge for me to be a girl, a real girly girl,” she said. “Living in Italy for a few months was pretty hard to resist. And I’ve been dying to work with [the director] Florian [Henckel von Donnersmarck] and I’ve always wanted to work with Johnny and never met him, so it was a great. Everything was great about this project.”

The movie’s director was equally charmed by his leading actors and likened the premiere’s madness to the kind he experienced shooting the film abroad. “Well, now you can imagine what it was like every single day,” he laughed to MTV News. “And we had about 30,000 [people] standing behind the barricades whenever we tried to do an intimate scene, so it was quite adventurous.”

He added that working with the two stars was pure joy. “It’s exciting,” he explained. “There’s a reason why we’re all so fascinated with these people. It’s because they are so fascinating and they’re fun, very creative people. … Actually, I think they’re not too far from what they are onscreen in this film. … Johnny is as funny and as cool as he is onscreen in real life. I’d say there’s very little difference. … He’s everybody’s idol.

“And Angelina’s the same way,” he continued. “She’s just so elegant and feminine and just exciting … it was quite an experience working with them.”

‘I feel like I could stand behind it,’ actress says of racy NC-17-rated film.

Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling have an NC-17-rated, rather-depressing love affair in their new, buzzy flick “Blue Valentine.” The film follows a married couple over the course of their relationship and boasts some graphic sex scenes to help weave the tale. So, is Williams nervous about her daughter, Matilda, checking out the film one day?

“I’ve been thinking about that recently, the last couple days,” she told MTV News at a junket for the film. “I thought, ‘What would her reaction to that be?’

“I feel proud of this movie, and I feel like I could stand behind it when she grows up and says, ‘What were you doing for those two months in Pennsylvania?’ I feel like I could say, ‘This is what I made.’ ”

The film, which opens on New Year’s Eve, may be too dark for a child to see, but much of Williams’ post-”Dawson’s Creek” work has been thought-provoking, something she said she’ll be proud to share with her daughter someday.

“And I feel like that with most of my work now: I feel like I’m excited for the day when she’s old enough to see it, because my aim is to make her proud that the time I spent away from her wasn’t in vain,” she explained.

While any mother/daughter viewings of “Blue Valentine” are yet to be determined, right now the pair is happy watching more family-friendly fare.

“She kind of lives in a Mary Poppins world,” Williams said. ” ‘Singing in the Rain’ is our current.”

Singer’s spot for Heat is not to air before 7:30 p.m. due to its ‘sexually provocative’ imagery.

Whether through her music videos or concerts, Beyoncé has always used her sex appeal as part of her pop-star allure. But is she too sexy? The U.K.’s Advertising Standards Authority thinks so. The singer’s television spot for her fragrance, Heat, was recently banned from daytime rotation due to its “sexually provocative” imagery.

In a statement posted on its website, the advertising watchdog said that it has received several complaints about the spot, which was aired throughout the day during family programming and will now only be shown after 7:30 p.m. While the organization noted that the ad was unlikely to harm an older audience, it deemed the spot unsuitable for all-ages viewing. “We considered that Beyoncé’s body movements and the camera’s prolonged focus on shots of her dress slipping away to partially expose her breasts created a sexually provocative ad that was unsuitable to be seen by young children,” the ASA said.

In the Jake Nava-directed commercial, Beyoncé plays a seductive temptress, meandering about a steamy room. As she makes her way around the area, the singer croons Little Willie John’s 1956 classic “Fever.”

While she remains dressed, the star’s silky red dress holds close to her curves and exposes partial cleavage.

Coty UK, the company behind the fragrance, responded to the criticism, explaining that the TV spot was in line with the singer’s “sexy chic style,” artistically shot and consistent with many music videos.

Last year, the pop star spoke about the perfume’s advertisement in an interview with WWD. “It’s called Heat, so we wanted the ads to be really steamy and dewy,” said the singer. “My sexiest moments are when I’m just getting out of the tub or the shower and I’m clean, so I wanted to incorporate that in the ads. The dress was this liquid-y satin. The song ‘Fever’ I did years ago and always loved it. [For the commercial] I got to sing it a bit more whispery, more natural.”

Singer confirmed the American debut of his first opera, ‘Prima Donna.’

NEW YORK — Rufus Wainwright was in a celebratory mood at Carnegie Hall on Monday night. Just hours after the New York City Opera said it would host the first American production of Wainwright’s debut opera, “Prima Donna,” sometime in 2012, the singer/songwriter also told the audience about his engagement to partner of five years Jörn Weisbrodt.

“I proposed over an Indian meal,” Wainwright told VanityFair.com earlier. “I was very nonchalant, like, ‘Maybe we should get married. Will you marry me?’ ”

Wainwright, who was later joined onstage by sister Martha Wainwright and her year-old son, Arcangelo, gave an intimate performance of his sixth studio album, All Days Are Nights: Songs for Lulu, which was inspired in part by his mother, the late Kate McGarrigle. His father, folk singer Loudon Wainwright III, and Weisbrodt were in the audience.

The performance marked a sort of homecoming for the Canadian-American singer, who previously took the stage at Carnegie Hall in 2006 for “Rufus Does Judy,” a tribute to Judy Garland’s famous 1961 live album, Judy at Carnegie Hall. In addition to performing each of Lulu‘s 12 tracks, as well as songs from his earlier albums Want One and Poses, Wainwright pulled from his Judy repertoire, belting out “Get Happy” and “A Foggy Day,” in addition to “Alone Together,” which he dedicated to his fiancé.

Wainwright also shared his excitement for the upcoming “Prima Donna” production. “It has all been a dream of mine to walk up to the fountains of Lincoln Square to see a performance of one of my works,” Wainwright told the audience in trademark charming candor. “And now that’s that.”

The movie will be on hiatus until singer/actor’s muscle injury heals.

Last week, Justin Timberlake was spotted on crutches after sustaining an injury on the set of his sci-fi thriller “Now.” And now, more details are emerging about what happened to the singer/actor when he attempted to do his own stunts on the set of the Amanda Seyfried and Olivia Wilde co-starring flick.

Sources say they “heard a pop” in Timberlake’s leg, and E! News confirmed that Timberlake’s injury has temporarily shut down production on the film. A rep for the studio said in a statement, “Justin Timberlake sustained a muscle injury to his calf on the set of Andrew Niccol’s thriller ‘Now.’ Production has taken a brief hiatus and will resume shortly.”

A set source told the website that the shutdown should last about two weeks. “He hasn’t heard anything about the MRI results,” the source added. “But they’re freezing production until he’s off crutches and able to act again.” Timberlake was spotted at the Arclight theater in Hollywood for a “Social Network” Q&A session last Thursday, and he seemed to be having trouble walking. The session took place shortly after he was injured.

Timberlake has been making waves as an actor as of late thanks to his roles in “The Social Network” and “Friends With Benefits,” which also features Mila Kunis and Emma Stone.

“I gotta tell you, breaking up with Justin Timberlake is really fun,” Stone recently told MTV News. “It’s a feel-good time. He’s such a nice, funny guy. It was really fun. We had a good time.”

We’ve been keeping up with the choreography of this ballet thriller from the start.

Long before Darren Aronofsky resurrected Mickey Rourke’s career inside the ropes of a wrestling ring, the director hit upon the idea to spin a big-screen tale about a love affair between a ballet dancer and a wrestler.

“What was amazing to me was how similar the performers in both of these worlds are,” he explained to MTV News. “They both make incredible use of their bodies to express themselves. They’re both performers.”

But Aronofsky soon realized that incorporating these two disparate athletic worlds was simply too much story for one single movie. He ended up dropping the ballet idea and making “The Wrestler,” a film that nabbed two Oscar nominations. Two years later, he’s picked up the ballet again for “Black Swan,” the Natalie Portman-starring drama about a dancer in a highly competitive New York company. It’s expected to garner even more Oscar nods.

“I’ve always considered the two films companion pieces,” Aronofsky said. “They are really connected, and people will see the connections.”

Long before we checked out “Black Swan” earlier this week, we’ve been connecting the dots. With the film getting a limited release Friday (December 3), here’s everything you need to know about this awards-season darling.

Training for the Dance
Last June, with the status of his “RoboCop” reboot up in the air, Aronofsky veered away from his plans to make a movie about a futuristic man/bot hybrid and toward work on “Black Swan.” After years of discussion with the director, Portman signed on to star in what was being described as a drama with possible supernatural overtones in which Portman’s ballerina, on the verge of the biggest performance of her career, faces a terrifying question: Is her rival real or just a delusion?

“Like the way we kind of knew that Mickey Rourke was going to be in ‘The Wrestler’ and we were able to construct the material for him, Natalie had been attached to the film for eight or nine years; so when we were thinking about it, we were thinking about Natalie,” Aronofsky told us. “First and foremost, we just wanted to make the character work and make sense of the character. Then Natalie, through her own work, was able to get to a place where she was able to play it.”

By November, the rest of the cast began to come together: Mila Kunis as Portman’s rival and Winona Ryder as a dancer past her prime. Vincent Cassel eventually came aboard as the company’s intense director and Barbara Hershey as Portman’s overbearing mother.

About That Sex Scene …
Late that same year, rumors started floating around that the film called for Portman and Kunis to engage in a steamy sex scene. When we talked to Portman, she confirmed the scene would indeed take place. “It’s a very extreme movie,” she explained. “It’s like very extreme situations. But it’s not explicit in any way.”

Yet it was explicit enough for Kunis to ban her father from watching the scene in question. “[My dad] was like, ‘I don’t think I should see the movie,’ ” she told us. “I was like, ‘See the movie. There’s going to be a point; get up and leave.’ ”

That scene, it turned out, wasn’t the only sexually explicit one in the film. There’s also a masturbation scene, in which Portman is caught by her mother. “So disgusting,” Portman said of shooting the scene. “It was akin to the experience of watching the movie with my parents sitting next to me, let me tell you.”

Raising the Curtain
The super creepy trailer dropped online in August and set the Web on fire; a prominent lesbian kiss will do that, we suppose. It was also clear that Kunis and Portman got into crazy shape for the production. As they’d tell us later, they each dropped 20 pounds and spent the entire shoot starving.

“We were on set together in tutus, emaciated and tired,” Portman told us at the red-carpet premiere this week.

And the intensity of the experience continued to affect them, even after they were able to ditch their diets and eat like normal human beings. “I definitely felt both physical and mental aftershocks from the experience, because it was the first thing I’ve ever done that was this physically demanding on top of an emotionally demanding part,” Portman explained in an earlier interview. “The kind of discipline that it demands also puts you in that space for the acting part. But yeah, it affects you in ways. I’ll probably figure out how it affected me in, like, five years. I’ll look back and go, ‘Oh, that’s why I did that and that and that.’ ”

Jay-Z is letting fans into his world with two major releases this month. He just published his book, “Decoded,” in which he takes a closer look at his career, and on Monday (November 22), Hova is releasing a greatest-hits album, The Hits Collection, Volume 1.

The album features Jay’s most memorable tunes, including “Big Pimpin’,” “Hard Knock Life,” “99 Problems” and his collabo with his superstar wife, Beyoncé, “03′ Bonnie & Clyde.”

But when MTV News caught up with Bey Sunday at a New York screening for her DVD concert special, “I Am … World Tour,” she admitted that “Bonnie & Clyde” isn’t her favorite Jay-Z track.

“God, that’s not my favorite, even though I like it,” she laughed. “I can’t tell you which one is my favorite. It’s just too many. You’re putting me on the spot!”

While the pair may be releasing fresh products at the same time, the singer insists there is no competition in the Carter-Knowles household.

“No absolutely not, [there is no competition],” she told reporters at the DVD event, going on to praise “Decoded.” “That book is unbelievable, and I think we’re all really proud of it. And this DVD [out this] Thanksgiving — it’s the holiday season of everyone’s [material] coming out.”

The DVD shows a new, more intimate side of the usually private Beyoncé, and Jay-Z admits that his book also sheds new light on his persona and career. “A lot of people listen to music, but they don’t really listen to it,” he explained. “You may know the words and you may bop your head to it, but you don’t really understand what you’re singing.”

On Thursday, MTV News began our countdown of the Top 25 Songs of 2010, revealing our picks for 25 through 18. On Friday (December 3), we’re unveiling 17 through 11, a list that includes heavy-hitters like Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and B.o.B.

And if seeing those kinds of names outside the top 10 shocks you, well, you’re not alone. But in a year with so many really great songs, some tough decisions had to be made — and MTV News staffers were the ones making the calls. Over the past month, we asked them to come up with their own lists of their 25 favorite songs of 2010; they didn’t have to be singles and, really, they didn’t even have to be released in 2010. We were looking for any song that made an impact this year, be it commercially, culturally or critically. When we finally received all the lists, we had proof of just what a year it was: More than 300 different songs from some 200 artists were chosen, and it was up to a select few to tabulate the results and create a top 25.

Using a point system — the #1 song on each list received 25 points, the #25 song received 1 point — we spent the next few weeks whittling down the lists. Finally, after some frantic addition (math was never our strong suit) and some rather spirited debate, we had our list — and we feel it’s a great one, full of songs by artists both big and small, yet all impactful in some way. It wasn’t easy, but we got it done.

This week, we’ll roll out 25 through 11, and then on Monday, we’ll begin to unveil our top 10. Oh, and we’re interested in seeing your lists too. Feel free to add them in the comments below. But now, without further ado, let’s look back on the year that was, by continuing our countdown of the Top 25 Songs of 2010:

17. Rihanna, “Rude Boy”
Total Points: 65

A straight-up sex jam from the formerly demure Ms. Fenty, “Rude Boy” was the third single from the Rated R album, but unlike most everything else on the disc, it’s not a morbid, morose affair. Rather, it’s full of swirling synths and rushing handclaps, jerking along on a dancehall lilt and RiRi’s newfound ragga swagger. Straying from the drama that had enveloped her life during the recording of the album, “Rude Boy” is Rihanna looking for love — or, more specifically, a man to give that love to her. And on this night, it may be you. Can you get it up? Is you big enough? No pressure or anything.

16. Lady Gaga, “Alejandro”
Total Points: 77

It’s perhaps the most, uh, oddball track in Lady Gaga’s increasingly odd arsenal — in that it sounds like Madonna’s “La Isla Bonita” (or an Ace of Base B-side) — so it should come as no surprise to anyone that she decided to release it as a single, complete with a nine-minute video in which she swallows a rosary and pouts like Marlene Dietrich. Sure, Katy Perry might not have liked it all that much, but the rest of us marveled at Gaga’s bravado, not only to transform a breezy ode to summertime love into a curio from the Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, but to carry such a retro-leaning song all the way to the upper reaches of the Hot 100. There truly isn’t anything she can’t do.

15. Rihanna, “Only Girl (In the World)”
Total Points: 90

By the time she released Loud, Rihanna was telling anyone who would listen that she was done being dire and just wanted to have some fun. And, well, there were few songs released this year as flat-out fun as “Only Girl,” a bubbly slice of club pop with — arguably — 2010′s best chorus, a super-charged, positively life-affirming thing that somehow sounded best when it was shouted very loudly from the middle of a packed dance floor. Or in the shower. The greatest pop songs work no matter where you hear them, and “Only Girl (In the World)” is most definitely a great pop song.

14. B.o.B (featuring Bruno Mars), “Nothin’ on You”
Total Points: 91

The first of B.o.B’s two heart-on-his-sleeve hits, “Nothin’ on You” is a sweet, almost hokey love letter to the girls that rock both his — and crooner/producer Bruno Mars’ — world, and it’s notable not only for its downright viral level of catchiness (seriously, listen to it and see how long it takes you to start singing “Na-na-na-nothin’ on you, babe!”), but because it introduced the world to two of the year’s biggest breakout stars. They’ll travel far and wide, but B.o.B and Bruno will always come back home to you. Shout-out to girls who pay their taxes!

13. Kanye West (featuring Bon Iver, Jay-Z, Nicki Minaj and Rick Ross), “Monster”
Total Points: 94

The year’s most appropriately titled track, “Monster” is a menacing, maniacal posse cut, growling along on a beastly backbeat (courtesy of King Kanye) and downright angry verses from Ross (who proudly proclaims himself to be a “fat mother—-er”), Jay (who raps about Sasquatch and whines that he doesn’t get enough loooove), West (who would like to put your lady parts in a sarcophagus) and, most notably, Nicki (who more than stands up to her heavyweight competition; she K.O.’s them all). If most of ‘Ye’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is an exploration of his madcap life, “Monster” is a look deep inside his own psyche. More terrifyingly, it’s his snarling superego.

12. B.o.B (featuring Hayley Williams), “Airplanes”
Total Points: 99

Like Kanye, B.o.B isn’t afraid to point out the fact that everything in the fabulous life isn’t necessarily all that fabulous, that no matter how many ringtones you sell or how many people you surround yourself with, you’re still going to be unhappy and, ultimately, alone. So instead you spend your nights wishing on airplanes and holding your phone in your lap, hoping against hope, thinking about how that job as a sandwich artist wasn’t really all that bad, in retrospect. And then in the morning, you get up and do it all over again. Because you have to. Swoony and somber, “Airplanes” is proof that even rappers can get emo. Do people even use that word anymore?

11. Katy Perry, “Teenage Dream”
Total Points: 102

The beauty of “Teenage Dream” is its simplicity: It is a song about being helplessly, head-over-heels in love and nothing more. It doesn’t matter that, at the time of this writing, Katy Perry is 26 years old, or that she’s happily married to a famous British comedian; you still believe her when she’s singing it (it probably has something to do with the way she hits the chorus: “You! Make! Me!”). Shoot, as “Glee” proved, you don’t even have to be a girl to record a convincing version of the song. “Teenage Dream” proves that, when it comes to matters of the heart, it’s always best to keep it simple — truthfully, swooningly so.

‘Layin’ bad minds to rest 2010!’ songstress tweets of upcoming project.

With 2010 coming to a close, M.I.A. has already announced her plans for the new year: Flood the Web with some new music. On Friday (December 3), the electro-dance superstar tweeted that she’s going to drop a mixtape on December 31.

“Vicky leekx mixtape coming new years eve!” she wrote. The indie-music luminary didn’t elaborate on the sound of the project but added that she plans to churn out a suite of tracks that will make an impact. “Layin bad minds to rest 2010!”

The “Born Free” artist has been trekking across Europe on tour and is slated to be on the road until December 12, according to her MySpace page. But it appears she was able to squeeze in some studio time while ripping stages overseas. And although her politically charged lyricism and genre-smashing beats have captivated her fans, the story behind the production of her music often rivals the British star’s singular vibe.

M.I.A.’s 2007 pastiche of reggae-inflected, worldly electro, Kala, reflected the global sensibility of recording pretty much everywhere on Earth other than her homebase at the time, Brooklyn, while stuck in immigration limbo. For 2010′s /\/\/\Y/\ she pretty much stayed put, but still banged out the album in dramatic fashion: hunkering down in a custom-built studio beneath her home.

“I built a room under the house that was kind of like a cave; you had to go down into it,” she told MTV News in July. “And then I just sort of made it as creative as possible for me — I was just sort of making the furniture and making the pictures, covered all the walls with stuff that I made, so it feels like every step of the way, I was working on the layers of this sort of environment.”

Singer’s spot for Heat is not to air before 7:30 p.m. due to its ‘sexually provocative’ imagery.

Whether through her music videos or concerts, Beyoncé has always used her sex appeal as part of her pop-star allure. But is she too sexy? The U.K.’s Advertising Standards Authority thinks so. The singer’s television spot for her fragrance, Heat, was recently banned from daytime rotation due to its “sexually provocative” imagery.

In a statement posted on its website, the advertising watchdog said that it has received several complaints about the spot, which was aired throughout the day during family programming and will now only be shown after 7:30 p.m. While the organization noted that the ad was unlikely to harm an older audience, it deemed the spot unsuitable for all-ages viewing. “We considered that Beyoncé’s body movements and the camera’s prolonged focus on shots of her dress slipping away to partially expose her breasts created a sexually provocative ad that was unsuitable to be seen by young children,” the ASA said.

In the Jake Nava-directed commercial, Beyoncé plays a seductive temptress, meandering about a steamy room. As she makes her way around the area, the singer croons Little Willie John’s 1956 classic “Fever.”

While she remains dressed, the star’s silky red dress holds close to her curves and exposes partial cleavage.

Coty UK, the company behind the fragrance, responded to the criticism, explaining that the TV spot was in line with the singer’s “sexy chic style,” artistically shot and consistent with many music videos.

Last year, the pop star spoke about the perfume’s advertisement in an interview with WWD. “It’s called Heat, so we wanted the ads to be really steamy and dewy,” said the singer. “My sexiest moments are when I’m just getting out of the tub or the shower and I’m clean, so I wanted to incorporate that in the ads. The dress was this liquid-y satin. The song ‘Fever’ I did years ago and always loved it. [For the commercial] I got to sing it a bit more whispery, more natural.”

‘Incredible records go with incredible tours,’ he tells MTV News of his string of hits.

Don’t call it a comeback, but following a tumultuous 2009 that included a messy divorce, Usher could describe the past 12 months as his climb back to the top. Now, he’s celebrating with a national tour.

“Been hard at work getting ready for this tour … Man, ya’ll are really in for a treat,” the singer tweeted Monday. “I’m on. Twits back up.”

Recently, MTV News caught up with Ursh about his upcoming national run.

“The tour starts November 13 in Seattle,” Usher said. “[Producer] Max Martin made an incredible record with ‘DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love,’ but what would I expect: less? He’s one of the best.”

Racking up several hits on the Billboard chart this year, including “OMG” featuring will.i.am, his current single checks in at #5 on the Hot 100, and Usher couldn’t be happier.

“[I'm] loving it. Just in time for an incredible tour,” Usher said during a recent visit to New York. “I took a step away from L.A. tonight. My dancers and crew are real hot with me right now.”

Earlier this week, the singer was nominated for four Soul Train Awards, along with Alicia Keys. Usher is up for Best R&B/Soul Artist Male, Song of the Year, Album of the Year and Best Dance Performance.

The singer was confident that his upcoming run will be memorable. “The tour’s gonna be incredible,” Usher said. “Incredible records go with incredible tours.”

While much of the buzz about “Black Swan” has been focused on the sexual undertones — and overtones — the real story is about the intensive training stars Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis underwent in order to transform for their performances.

When MTV News caught up with Kunis, we asked her to give us the “CliffsNotes” version of her laborious undertaking for the flick, which opens Friday.

“The preparation was, get as skinny as you possibly can as fast as you can and then learn to get en pointe while doing it,” she said. “I got the part, let’s say on a Wednesday. Thursday morning I went into the ballet studio in L.A. with Alexandra Blacker who was my ballet instructor. [She] was 20 years old at the time and had already broken her back and had fractured ribs and things. I went in there, started working with her for seven days a week, five hours a day and was put on a 1,200-calorie diet for a total of five or six months,” Kunis explained. “I did get one day off, and that was my birthday; Alexandra made me a root beer float.”

The feisty 27-year-old added that her regimen didn’t stop for scheduling conflicts, even the Emmys.

“We’re talking all day, every day,” she said of her training schedule. I remember during the Emmys and I said, ‘I don’t think I can make it, I have to get ready for the Emmys.’ [Blacker] said, ‘Yeah you can. I’ll see you at 6 a.m.’ So I went in at 6 a.m., danced for five hours, came home, showered and went to the Emmys.”

Kunis went on to say that her younger instructor was quite the slave driver. “She never gave me a break. She was 20 and she kicked my ass.”

Ush combined his legendary dance skills with spectacular special effects.

Call it what you will: talent, swag, skills. But one thing’s true about Usher Terry Raymond IV: When he steps on the dance floor, some mysterious thing comes out of him and puts the G in groove. After he was tapped to perform at the 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards, executive producer Dave Sirulnick challenged Usher to “show why you’re king,” and the 31-year-old Grammy winner didn’t disappoint.

As predicted by the lucky few who got a peek at Thursday’s practice performance for his hit “OMG,” Ush pulled off moves that would make the late great Michael Jackson jealous in a mammoth stage production that included more special-effects bells and whistles than a summer blockbuster.

Usher opened the performance with “DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love,” perched two flights above the stage on a ledge surrounded by blinding green laser lights. Then he slid, with the help of barely visible wires and mounts, down a flight, all the while popping and locking. When the father of two finally ticked his way down to stage level, he was surrounded by an army of dancers also clad in black suits with white stripes designed to toss and catch special effect lights.

Directed by Anthony Mandler, Usher’s “OMG” clip earned Best Male Video, Best Dance Music Video and Best Choreography Moonman nominations. During the pre-show, Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” beat it in the Best Dance category, where Raymond was, for many, the lead contender.

If Usher was disappointed, he didn’t let it show. When he launched the “OMG” portion of his performance, the stage seemed to disappear, as red laser lights moved forward in blinding configurations spelling out O.M.G. and Usher’s name. More dancers lowered from the ceiling on Cirque du Soleil-esque contraptions, dipping in and out of the red beams. Such a 3-D light display could probably have been seen from the moon, if it weren’t for the roof of the Nokia Theatre.

Usher ended his set standing, head back, with his arms outstretched in the Jesus pose. He didn’t say a word. Didn’t need to.

Alleged actor Josh Duhamel was escorted off of a plane after refusing to turn off his BlackBerry yesterday. Hey … there are crucial NBA scores to check, alright?

Duhamel was on a flight from New York to Kentucky when a flight attendant asked him to turn off his phone before takeoff. Indignant, he would not do so.

A passenger says he was “very rude,” even “taunting the attendant.” And you wonder why Steven Slater peaced out in hilarious, illegal fashion this summer.

DUHAMEL-NO, he won’t go! Wait, actually he will …

According to TMZ, the flight attendant asked Fergie’s husband to turn off the device three separate times, and the third time, Josh laughed at his request.

Duhamel’s reaction infuriated the attendant, who then called for backup. The plane, which was already on the runway, was turned back to the gate.

Officers boarded and escorted Duhamel off. Passengers were pissed, and rightfully so … this was a bigger waste of time than any episode of Las Vegas.

Duhamel’s rep told TMZ, “He’s sorry.” How moving.

Justin Bieber is getting serious in the new video for his My Worlds Acoustic track “Pray.” The clip opens up with a montage of people in need. Then a shot of Bieber playing his guitar is flashed.

The video features mixes images of natural disasters and war with shots of Bieber meeting with fans in the hospital and footage of him performing. The clip closes with the message: “God speaks in the silence of the heart. Listening is the beginning of prayer.”

Bieber seems happy with the results. “So proud of this song and this video,” he tweeted. “I sing this one from the heart.”

The clip certainly fits with the tune’s heartening theme and message, which was inspired by the King of Pop himself. “It’s a very uplifting song, very motivational. It definitely comes from the heart. It’s very beautiful,” Bieber explained recently in a radio interview with Ryan Seacrest. “I definitely thought of Michael [Jackson's] ‘Man in the Mirror’ when I was writing it.”

Bieber is donating part of the proceeds from his My Worlds Acoustic album to the Children’s Miracle Network. “I am in the position to give back thanks to my fans and God,” he said in a press release. “I wrote ‘Pray’ thinking I wanted to help others and I feel like I have a responsibility to do so. What is the point of doing all this if you can’t make a difference in others’ lives? This album is a gift to my fans and the money raised from it allows us all to help out.”

“I’m bewildered,” Robert Plant said onstage as he accepted the Grammy Album of the Year award with Alison Krauss on Sunday night. “In the old days we would have called this selling out, but it’s a good way to spend a Sunday.”

He was probably one of the few who were surprised, because Raising Sand, which won five trophies at Sunday night’s show, is in many ways the perfect Grammy album. It features two respected veterans, a critically lauded producer, some sandpaper-and-velvet vocals and a baker’s dozen of time-tested standards.

You’re probably familiar with Robert Plant from his Led Zeppelin days, and you might be aware of producer T-Bone Burnett’s work on the “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” soundtrack (it won the Grammy for Album of the Year in 2002). And if you don’t know who Alison Krauss is, she possesses a haunting set of pipes and is one of the meanest fiddle players in the world. Oh, and she’s won 21 Grammys, more than any other female artist and the seventh-most in history.

Really, she’s the key to Sand‘s success, and not just because of her voice (or her fiddle playing). She and Plant first met in 2004, at a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame tribute to legendary bluesman Leadbelly, and the former Zeppelin man was amazed by her knowledge of American Roots music — so much so that they began kicking around the idea of recording an album together. Three years later, Sand was released.

And while Plant possesses the more famous voice, the album’s finest moments radiate from Krauss. Whether she’s getting bluesy on Little Milton’s “Let Your Loss Be Your Lesson” or entwining with Plant’s husky voice on songs like “Please Read the Letter” and Roly Salley’s winsome “Killing the Blues,” she more than carries her end of the bargain.

And perhaps that’s also due to producer Burnett, who handpicked the 13 songs the duo cover on Sand. His arrangements are sparse — giving the two voices ample room to breathe — yet dense, warm and crackling at the same time. It’s a testament to his work that he’s often given just as much billing as Plant and Krauss on the project … and it’s certainly justified.

To date, Sand has sold more than 1 million copies, heaped tons of acclaim and actually earned a Grammy last year — “Gone Gone Gone (Done Moved On)” took home the award for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals.

One expert was surprised not by the album’s success, but by the fact that it’s actually quite a good album.

“At first, the album seemed like a vanity project. … Two names, clearly a one-off record, didn’t have to be any good, you know?” New York Times music critic Jon Caramanica said. “Led Zeppelin fans would buy it because of Robert Plant, Alison Krauss would get a check. But it actually turned out to be a really thoughtful, really good record. So when you combine all that with the fact that the Grammys love to lionize one of their own, I could really see it taking home some awards.”

‘So disgusting,’ still-squeamish actress tells MTV News of filming scene.

“Black Swan” has been generating awards-season buzz for months, much of it focused on Natalie Portman’s chilling performance as a self-destructive and psychologically unstable ballerina, Nina Sayers. When the movie opens this Friday, audiences will finally get to see the physical and emotional extremes that Portman portrays onscreen.

One of the more memorable physical moments involves an especially graphic scene in which Portman’s character is masturbating and nearly gets caught by her mother. When MTV News caught up with the possible Best Actress contender, we asked for her thoughts on that part of the film.

“So disgusting,” Portman said of shooting the sequence. “It was akin to the experience of watching the movie with my parents sitting next to me, let me tell you.”

The 29-year-old also called the “finger scene” — in which Nina pulls at a loose piece of skin on her finger, causing it to bleed — particularly gruesome.

Portman’s co-star Vincent Cassel plays the handsome, manipulative artistic director who exploits Nina’s insecurities to his advantage. Cassel told us he wasn’t at all surprised by Portman’s squeamishness.

“I don’t know what I can say about the finger scene, for example, because I’m not really part of it,” he said. “But, I guess, you know, it’s already a little hard to watch yourself on the screen when suddenly you have to go through sexual things. It’s not easy for us. Trust me,” he said.

“It’s difficult being a sex symbol, isn’t it, Vincent?” Portman teased her co-star. Cassel quickly shot back with a laugh, “I don’t know, tell me!”

Producer Alex Da Kid has had quite the year, collaborating with Eminem and Rihanna on the chart-topping “Love the Way You Lie” as well as B.o.B and Hayley Williams on the equally anthemic “Airplanes.” Now that the 2011 Grammy nominations have been announced, Alex has racked up a few nods, and his two biggest hits will even duke it out for Record of the Year.

MTV News caught up with Alex via phone Thursday (December 2), and he said he was extremely excited about the recognition but wasn’t surprised: He knew these songs would put him on the map from day one.

“I remember sitting in the studio with Em and being like, ‘I’m writing my Grammy speech right now,’ ” Alex recalled. “He hates all that stuff, and he hates it when I say stuff like that, but I really believed in it from the start.”

Alex’s first major song was B.o.B’s “Airplanes,” which he said paved the way for his second Grammy-nominated song, “Love the Way You Lie.” Eminem — who received 10 nominations himself — is featured on “Airplanes Pt. II,” and Alex said their relationship grew from there.

The rookie producer faces stiff competition in the Record of the Year category — where he faces off against Cee Lo’s “F— You,” Lady Antebellum’s “Need You Now” and Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ “Empire State of Mind” — but Alex remains confident about his chances.

“I mean, I think they’re pretty good,” he told MTV News of his pair of tracks. “I’m a confident person, and they’re my favorite songs out of the category we’re in, but you never know.”

Justin Bieber has been known to dabble in the world of rap. Not only does he perform the rap portion of “Baby” when he sings the song live — since Ludacris isn’t always available to hit the stage with the singer — he even dropped a rap song this fall under the rap pseudonym Shawty Mane in which he raps over Vado and Cam’ron’s “Speaking in Tungs.”

Now fans are waiting for what Bieber and Young Money MC Lil Twist will share with the world on their mixtape, some of which Lil Twist teased might drop very soon. When MTV News caught up with Bieber on Sunday at the American Music Awards, he said he had no further details to share about the collaboration. “I don’t know man,” he said, with a smile on his face. “Lil Twist is my homey and we’re working on stuff for fun.”

Of course, even if the mixtape never sees the light of day, Bieber has plenty of projects already under way, including the releases of My Worlds Acoustic this Friday and his 3-D movie, “Never Say Never,” next year. “I think this is only the beginning,” he said. “There’s so much more to come and I just hope that I have the career that Usher, my mentor, has had.”

It’s a sentiment that Usher shares. “There’s so much more in store for the future, or at least there’s a ton of things we can do and will,” he said. “And with the support of his fans, who will continue to just grow and grow and grow.”

Singer tells MTV News celebrity ‘Buy Life’ campaign is a ‘shocker’ but will engage everyone in cause of HIV/AIDS awareness.

Alicia Keys walked into the CNN newsroom on Wednesday (December 1) and saw the staff swirling around working and thought the sight would make for a cool picture to send to her Twitter followers.

The thing is, she’d killed off her digital life the night before. So no TwitPic, but Keys isn’t sweating it as she’s leading a campaign called Buy Life to raise awareness about the impact of HIV/AIDS and the many lives lost in Africa and India. The idea is for people to donate money to “buy back” hers and other celebrities’ digital lives by texting donations to benefit her Keep a Child Alive organization.

And the slogan is simple: You buy a digital life to save a real one.

“You can really feel the energy of it, it’s there,” Keys told MTV News of the campaign, which has set a goal of raising $1 million before celebrity participants like Usher, Kim Kardashian and Swizz Beatz return to Twitter and Facebook.

“I love that. That’s what’s so important about it, we’re engaging everyone,” Keys continued. “Not only are these incredible artists deciding to sacrifice their digital life until we collectively raise $1 million for the cause, but we’re asking everyone who participates in our Twitter and Facebook and who we communicate with to be a part of it as well. I think a lot of people feel like there are things going on in the world and want to do something but [think], ‘What am I supposed to do?’ So it feels like people have an outlet and a way to participate. By texting, by buying Usher’s life back, I think they get a bit of a shocker, but I think people will love it. And they’ll pay attention and know what do to.”

The initiative by Keys’ Keep a Child Alive was launched on Wednesday to coincide with World Aids Day. In addition to the “Un-Thinkable” singer, Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake, Ryan Seacrest and others have also given up their digital lives. Jay Sean told MTV News that while the approach may shock, sometimes ideas like this are needed to get a message across.

“I think we all sometimes turn a blind eye to things that might be depressing, too heavy,” the U.K. singer said. “But sometimes you need to be really shook up and poked and prodded to do something, because the way I believe is that every human needs another human being to get some life. … We need each other, and I feel like we should all help each other.”

Ush combined his legendary dance skills with spectacular special effects.

Call it what you will: talent, swag, skills. But one thing’s true about Usher Terry Raymond IV: When he steps on the dance floor, some mysterious thing comes out of him and puts the G in groove. After he was tapped to perform at the 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards, executive producer Dave Sirulnick challenged Usher to “show why you’re king,” and the 31-year-old Grammy winner didn’t disappoint.

As predicted by the lucky few who got a peek at Thursday’s practice performance for his hit “OMG,” Ush pulled off moves that would make the late great Michael Jackson jealous in a mammoth stage production that included more special-effects bells and whistles than a summer blockbuster.

Usher opened the performance with “DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love,” perched two flights above the stage on a ledge surrounded by blinding green laser lights. Then he slid, with the help of barely visible wires and mounts, down a flight, all the while popping and locking. When the father of two finally ticked his way down to stage level, he was surrounded by an army of dancers also clad in black suits with white stripes designed to toss and catch special effect lights.

Directed by Anthony Mandler, Usher’s “OMG” clip earned Best Male Video, Best Dance Music Video and Best Choreography Moonman nominations. During the pre-show, Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” beat it in the Best Dance category, where Raymond was, for many, the lead contender.

If Usher was disappointed, he didn’t let it show. When he launched the “OMG” portion of his performance, the stage seemed to disappear, as red laser lights moved forward in blinding configurations spelling out O.M.G. and Usher’s name. More dancers lowered from the ceiling on Cirque du Soleil-esque contraptions, dipping in and out of the red beams. Such a 3-D light display could probably have been seen from the moon, if it weren’t for the roof of the Nokia Theatre.

Usher ended his set standing, head back, with his arms outstretched in the Jesus pose. He didn’t say a word. Didn’t need to.

When the band returns to the U.S. in May, they ‘may even have a new album.’

For nearly their entire career, U2 have only known one way of operating: in the hugest way humanly possible. They’ve set records and broken banks with their music, their videos and their expansive, all-encompassing tours. The same can now be said about “Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark,” Bono and The Edge’s first foray into the world of Broadway.

Though it has just begun rehearsals, the play has already made headlines for its budget (a reported $60 million), lavish costumes and over-the-top staging, which sees Spidey battling foes and soaring high above the audience at the Foxwoods Theatre.

To Bono and The Edge, however, the scale of their “Spider-Man” show isn’t really all that different than what they’ve been doing for more than 30 years now. Case in point, their eternally running 360 Tour, which just began its fourth leg (hitting New Zealand and Australia) and will return to the U.S. in May. And when it does, U2′s dynamic duo promise that it will be worth the wait. After all, they may even have a new album to promote.

“When we were here last year, we were just getting used to how to play like that,” Bono told MTV News. “We did some really good shows, [but] they just keep getting better and better, though, we’re getting harder and harder; tougher. More attitude, more punk rock and more emotional, in another way. This strange thing has happened as the tour’s went on; we’ve been playing new songs. We may even have a new album by the end of the tour.”

That would presumably be one of the three new albums the band is working on, though Bono wouldn’t reveal which would see the light of day first. Instead, in true U2 form, he championed the revelatory nature of the 360 Tour. Because, really — and, in their case, eternally — the show’s the thing.

“The thing about the 360 Tour is, the spectacle is not actually this spaceship that lands in the middle of the stadium … the spectacle is the crowd, and the ability of the crowd to see each other and involve each other,” he said. “There’s this kind of call and response that goes on with the band and the crowd, and this sort of strange electric shock that goes through the stands, like a big Mexican wave of music that just travels around this virtuous circle.”

U2′s The Edge describes Broadway’s ‘Turn Off the Dark’ as ‘something that hasn’t been done before.’

The budget-busting Broadway musical “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” made its long-awaited debut last weekend to preview audiences, and though Peter Parker’s bow was marred by production miscues and a laundry list of problems, one issue that audiences didn’t seem to have a problem with was the music.

According to U2 bandmates Bono and The Edge, who composed the production’s score, that’s because comic books and rock and roll music are a natural fit.

“There’s always been a thing with punk rock bands and comics,” Bono told MTV News during an interview last week. “It’s always been there. Even the Ramones, who are also from Queens [New York] like Peter Parker and Mary Jane, they covered the theme to Spider-Man.”

“It goes through all, not just rock and roll culture, it’s in modern art,” he continued. “You see it in Roy Lichtenstein’s work, all the pop artists’ work; they all sample from comics.”

Featuring high-flying stunts and a multitude of moving set pieces that put the audience in the middle of the action when Spider-Man battles Green Goblin, Carnage and the rest of the show’s villains, “Turn Off the Dark” is treading new ground. In fact, the ambitious uses to which director Julie Taymor has put the project’s record-breaking budget have effectively distanced it from its peers — and caused some confusion when it comes time to describe the show.

“It’s like a graphic novel, but a three-dimensional one,” Bono ventured. “I’m calling it a pop-up, pop-art opera, because I’m pretentious. Julie’s calling it what?”

“I think she’s calling it a rock-and-roll circus drama,” The Edge answered. “We don’t really know what to call it, because there are so many aspects to it,” he explained. “A great night out. I think that’s what it is.”

The Edge acknowledged a similar difficulty in comparing “Turn Off the Dark” with anything that came before it.

With so much accomplished in 2010, Justin Bieber has certainly set the bar high for 2011. But the teen singer is already gearing up for next year. Bieber will not only release his much-anticipated 3-D flick, “Never Say Never”, but he has also teased that he’d like to release an album of all-new material sometime later next year.

His mentor, Usher, thinks that at this point, the sky’s the limit.

“As far as music and entertainment, that’s the beginning,” Usher told MTV News at Sunday’s AMAs, where Bieber performed and took home four awards.

“There’s so much more in store for the future, or at least there’s a ton of things we can do and will, and with the support of his fans who will continue to just grow and grow and grow.”

At 16, Bieber has accomplished what few manage with many more years in the music business, but Usher said he wants to ensure that Bieber doesn’t stop enjoying it all as his popularity continues to grow and his schedule gets busier.

Asked what he admires most about Justin, Usher said, “His excitement and innocence in it. And I don’t mean that in a light way because I think that he’s absolutely enjoying every moment of it, as any young man his age would, but in a different way because [of] the hard work that has gone in and led to the dream that has become a reality. And every time you have an opportunity do something incredible, I tell him to do his best and be conscious that what you’re doing today should last forever and eternity.”

Get the scoop on the singer’s latest album, out Black Friday.

On Black Friday, the year’s busiest shopping day by far, Justin Bieber will release his album, My Worlds Acoustic. It will feature one new track, “Pray,” as well as acoustic reinterpretations of some of Bieber’s biggest songs from his first two LPs, My World and My World 2.0.

While fans have gotten the chance to hear “Pray” as well as acoustic teases of “Favorite Girl” (when he stopped by Ryan Seacrest’s radio show this month) and “Never Say Never,” his musical director, Dan Kanter, tweeted what the rest of the album will sound like, saying, “Loving the percussion… Cajones and congas! Definitely an influence from our travels around the world!”

As for “Pray,” Bieber has said he was inspired by a track from the King of Pop himself. “It’s a very uplifting song, very motivational,” he said. “It definitely comes from the heart. It’s very beautiful. I definitely thought of Michael [Jackson's] ‘Man in the Mirror’ when I was writing it.”

The album, which also features “One Time,” “Baby,” “One Less Lonely Girl, “Down to Earth,” “U Smile,” “Stuck in the Moment” and “That Should Be Me,” was recorded because Bieber wanted to silence his critics. “I really think that I did an acoustic album because there’s a lot of haters out there that say, ‘Justin Bieber can’t sing. His voice is all Auto-Tuned,’ ” he said. “And there’s a lot with production, it kind of drowns out your voice, and it takes away from the singer, over the synths and everything.

“I think kind of stripping it down,” he added, “and having it kind of really mellow and being able to hear my voice is why I wanted to do it.”

Who knew that Pink‘s motorcycle-riding, heavily-tattooed, extreme-sports-loving husband Carey Hart was secretly a total softie? Now that his Grammy Award-winning wife is pregnant, Hart is going the extra mile to be the ideal husband.

"He has been so wonderful that it’s making me nervous!" Pink tells Access Hollywood. "He’s wanted to be a dad since – I mean, we’ve been together nine years on and off, and he brought it up two weeks after we met."

Pink, who is just over three months pregnant, says that her husband has been bringing her breakfast in bed every morning — although she doesn’t think he can keep it up for the rest of the pregnancy! The pair is also spending a lot of time trading thoughts on baby names — and often, clashing.

"I’m all about meaning, and Carey feels like he had a girl’s hair cut and a girl’s name, and he doesn’t want kids to have a weird name," says Pink, who was born Alecia Moore. "I have to get him on the boat for originality, so I’m working on him."

So far, their top choice for a boy’s name is Jameson — because of her father James, her brother Jason, Carey’s middle name Jason, their Irish heritage, and of course, their love of whiskey.

A girl’s name, they say, hasn’t been so forthcoming. Personally, we think they should take a cue from Pink’s stage name and go with a color. Coral, Fuschia and Azure are all pretty, right?

One thing is for sure: to quote Pink’s own words, Carey Hart is going to be "a really, really cute dad."

‘Deathly Hallows, Part 1′ continues to enchant moviegoers.

As people across the country recover from their Thanksgiving turkey comas, it’s clear that moviegoers remained energetic throughout the five-day holiday box-office weekend. Thanks to the combined efforts of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1″ and “Tangled,” this past weekend was the second-highest-grossing Thanksgiving period on record, second only to last year when “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” and “The Blind Side” battled it out.

“Harry Potter” led the charge, soaring away from the five-day weekend with $76.3 million in its pocket, $50.4 million of which was made during the standard Friday-through-Sunday timeframe. The seventh installment in the beloved novel-turned-film series has earned $220.4 million after two weekends in theaters, an impressive result that’s bound to get shattered when the second half of “Deathly Hallows” arrives next summer.

But Harry, Ron and Hermione didn’t earn first place without a fight, as Disney’s “Tangled” provided some stiff competition. Both movies targeted similar family-friendly crowds, and while “Harry Potter” won in the end, it was a close race. “Tangled” ended its five-day debut with $69 million, less than $10 million behind “Harry.” It was even closer when examining the standard three-day totals of each film, where “Potter” outpaced “Tangled” by less than $1 million. Of course, it can’t be ignored that “Tangled” debuted in almost 2,500 3-D locations — meaning higher ticket prices — while Warner Bros. opted to skip 3-D altogether for the first “Deathly Hallows” installment.

“Tangled” performed the best of the weekend’s new releases, with Cher and Christina Aguilera’s “Burlesque” coming in a distant second with a $17.2 million fourth-place finish. Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway’s “Love & Other Drugs” and Dwayne Johnson’s “Faster” fell flat, arriving in sixth and seventh place with $14 million and $12.2 million respectively over the five-day holiday weekend.

In October, Justin Bieber debuted the first trailer for his February 3-D flick “Never Say Never.” And on Monday (November 22), just one day after his big night at the AMAs, a new trailer for the flick hit the Internet.

The sneak peek opens with classical music playing as the screen reads, “This Valentine’s Day,” over an image of Bieber. Soon, the singer is spraying silly string as the screen reads, “See Bieber like never before.” Then, Bieber throws popcorn at the camera — all tricks to play up the film being in 3-D.

Soon, a montage of Bieber as a kid flashes across the screen along with concert video and behind-the-scenes footage of the singer with various people in Bieber’s camp sharing tidbits about the singer, including “He could really be huge, if he wanted” and “He’s 16, and he’s doing it all on his own.”

At the end of the trailer, Bieber is seen learning about the cameras used to shoot his 3-D flick as he sticks out 3-D glasses and looks into a screen seeing what the 3-D will look like. “That’s sick, right?” he says. “It looks like it’s about to hit that guy in the head.”

It was just announced that fans can catch a sneak-peek screening of the film February 9, two days before it officially hits theaters. They’ll be surprised just to see I’m a regular person,” he said. “I’m a regular teenage boy. I like girls, and I like to hang out with my friends. It’s gonna be taking them into my world, but also like it’s their world, ’cause it’s just normal.”

‘He seems like he’s a balls-out actor,’ Bale says of the ‘Inception’ star.

Who will Tom Hardy play in “The Dark Knight Rises”? Rumor has it the “Inception” actor is set to become a villain, though director Christopher Nolan has gone on record as saying the Riddler won’t factor into his upcoming third installment of the “Batman” reboot. There’s talk that Hardy would do well in the role of troubled psychologist Hugo Strange, crime lord Black Mask or gun-toting hit man Deadshot.

Whoever Hardy ends up portraying, the man he’ll likely do battle against is excited for the opportunity to act with him. “I liked him in ‘Inception’ and I did see ‘Bronson’ as well,” said Christian Bale — Bruce Wayne/Batman himself — in a recent interview with MTV News. “He seems like he’s a balls-out actor.”

When we asked Bale if he was looking forward to Hardy as an opponent, he answered, “Yeah, sounds good.”

Did Bale confirm that Hardy will in fact be a villain in “The Dark Knight Rises”? Did the “opponent” part of our question breeze right by Bale? Watch the video interview and judge for yourself.

While Bale left the door slightly open to returning for a fourth “Batman” flick, he seemed fairly convinced that “The Dark Knight Rises” will be his and Nolan’s final installment in the DC Comics franchise. “I think so. That’s up to Chris,” he said. “That was always what the discussion was. But you know, if Chris says, ‘I see another story here,’ then we’ll be up for it. But in my mind, I’m expecting this will be it.”

Of course, there’s always the fanciful hope that Bale and Nolan will reunite a few decades from now for an adaptation of Frank Miller’s “The Dark Knight Returns,” which tells the story of a 55-year-old Bruce Wayne who comes out of retirement to become the Caped Crusader once again.

“That maybe would not be bad,” Bale laughed of the idea. “Maybe in 20 years time, but you need that break.”

Jared Leto labored day and night to finish eventual 13-minute-plus short film.

30 Seconds to Mars’ Jared Leto in “Hurricane”

In early November, following his band’s performance of “Hurricane” with Kanye West at the 2010 MTV Europe Music Awards and months of adjective-filled hyperbole about the single’s accompanying video, Jared Leto finally unveiled 30 Seconds to Mars’ “Hurricane” clip on Monday (November 29). OK, “short film.” The singer decided to provide the sneak peek during an impromptu (though well-catered) screening for a handful of folks — including MTV News — in his bedroom at the ME Hotel in Madrid.

It was very late at night (or very early in the morning, depending on how you choose to look at these sort of things), and Leto was extremely clear about the fact that this was still “a very rough cut” of the video, playing the thing on a MacBook Pro and pausing every few frames to explain where a CG effect would be inserted or how the sound design would be shaped. But despite those facts (or, maybe, because of them), everyone left that bedroom thinking the exact same thing: “How the heck is Jared going to pull this off?”

You couldn’t blame them, because just weeks later, the final, 13-minute version debuted on MTV.com, and it did, indeed, contain a number of impressive CGI effects of the type you might see in a Hollywood superhero summer movie, not to mention enough NC-17-rated material to make “Eyes Wide Shut” look like “Love & Other Drugs” by comparison.

At the time, not only was “Hurricane” clocking in at around 20 minutes, it was sort of insane, too: a nightmarish rumination on sex and violence and secret fetishes that not only featured plenty of fight scenes (and nudity), but didn’t shy away from politically loaded imagery. Among the ones that made the cut was one in which a rabbi, priest and imam are seen tossing their holy prayer books onto a blazing pyre in a dank alley and another in which Leto battled a leather-masked foe in a courtyard littered with American-flag-draped coffins. (Spoiler alert, someone you know ends up in one of those coffins.)

Part snuff film, part BBC World report, it was, in short, filled with the kind of stuff that makes censors cringe, in an era where that’s increasingly difficult to do. Following some cuts, the finished product contains a number of scenes seemingly too-hot-to-handle, which are dispatched with a big black “censored” bar. Though given the copious nudity, S&M play, barely there fetish gear and one quick-cut image of a woman spitting into another’s mouth, you kind of have to wonder what was so deviant that it couldn’t make the cut among all these dark fantasies?

Add in the fact that Leto was attempting to weave three separate narratives — the members of 30STM each battling their personal demons and unlocking secret fantasies — in between all that sex and blood and book-burning, and you have the makings of a major undertaking. Considering that, according to his label, the video was due to premiere at the end of the month, Leto was then cutting the thing full-time, in the midst of a world tour, with the help of a team of editors that traveled with him everywhere he went.

It seemed that, in just about every conceivable manner, “Hurricane” was a monster, an ode to not only Leto’s ego, but his unyielding ambition and utterly unmatched enthusiasm, which, in theory, made it not unlike everything he’s ever attempted with 30 Seconds to Mars. But everyone who saw it that night in Madrid knew differently. “Hurricane” may very well have been Leto going too far, pushing too hard. It seemed practically destined to remain forever unfinished.

But, like the song’s guest rapper West, Leto is a hard man to deter, and he clearly got his way, delivering a 13-minute mind-bender that involves secret keys that unlock dark fears, treachery, seduction, submission, an unexplained cockroach cameo, a silver sexual aid on a platter and enough creepy masks to make Slipknot shudder.

Somehow, by Monday, Leto had wrangled all those dark thoughts and visions into one dizzying whole and brought “Hurricane” home for its premiere. It would have been hard to find many people in the room that night who would have put money on “Hurricane” coming ashore in such record time. Well, except Leto. He knew.

If you see headlines this Wednesday about Lady Gaga and Kim Kardashian giving up on social media, don’t be alarmed. Along with Usher, Elijah Wood, Justin Timberlake, Khloe Kardashian and Jennifer Hudson, they’re participating in a stunt to promote World AIDS Day in which they will kill off their cyberselves for one day as part of a Digital Life Sacrifice.

The idea was hatched by singer Alicia Keys to raise money for her charity, Keep a Child Alive, and as part of the Buy Life promotion the celebrities will urge fans to donate to the charity in order to buy back their online presence. Fans can text the first name of the celebrity they are mourning to 90999 and $10 will instantly be donated to the cause.

Kardashian is among the participants who have posed for a poster to bring attention to the effort. In it, she lies in a casket while wearing a cocktail dress and clutching her cell phone. Celebrities such as mega-tweeter Ryan Seacrest have agreed to sign off all social networks on Tuesday until they raise $1 million for World AIDS Day. Seacrest has even videotaped a “Last Tweet and Testament” representing his digital death for his Facebook page that will be linked to from his final tweet early Tuesday morning.

In another taped plea, Jennifer Hudson says, “Come on, y’all. Buy my life back. Go on a shopping spree and buy as much of it as you can.” Keep a Child Alive helps provide money for medical care and support services for children and families impacted by HIV and AIDS in Africa and India.

Janelle Monáe and Keys’ husband, producer Swizz Beatz, have also filmed “Last Tweet and Testament” clips and been photographed in coffins.

“It’s so important to shock you to the point of waking up,” Keys told The Associated Press. “It’s not that people don’t care or it’s not that people don’t want to do something, it’s that they never thought of it quite like that. … This is such a direct and instantly emotional way and a little sarcastic, you know, of a way to get people to pay attention.”

Keys founded Keep a Child Alive in 2003, and on September 30, she and co-founder Leigh Blake launched Buy Life. As part of the campaign, they’ve issued a $35 gray T-shirt with a barcode on it, and users who’ve uploaded the Stickybits or Wimo applications to their smartphones can donate $10 to the charity by scanning any Buy Life shirt with their devices.

“This Shirt Fights AIDS,” reads the back of the shirt. “Scan the bar code or text ‘BUYLIFE’ to 90999 to join the fight.”

It’s unlikely that Gaga and the others will be digitally deceased for long — Gaga has 24 million Facebook fans, and collectively, the celebs have nearly 29 million followers on Twitter.

This isn’t the first time labels have loaded the shelves with new releases all at once.

The sheer volume of mainstream albums dropping this week makes our head spin like that ancient artifact, the vinyl record. Monday saw the release of Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday, Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, Ke$ha’s Cannibal, Jay-Z’s The Hits Collection Vol. 1, Lloyd Banks’ Hunger for More 2 and My Chemical Romance’s Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys. And Friday is the big day for Justin Bieber’s My Worlds Acoustic.

Many may wonder why the bigwigs of the music industry would put out such a gargantuan selection all at once. But there’s a precedent for this kind of strategy. In fact, music lovers have been through this very same overload dilemma a handful of times over the last decade. Here’s a look back at some of them:

September 11, 2001 became a national tragedy, though it was supposed to be a huge day for the music business. Mariah Carey’s “Glitter” soundtrack, Jay-Z’s Blueprint, Bob Dylan’s Love and Theft, Ben Folds’ Rockin’ the Suburbs, Nickelback’s Silver Side Up and P.O.D.’s Satellite were among the many albums that were released at the beginning of the week.

November 18, 2003 marked the start to one of the year’s biggest music release weeks. The range of albums seemed to hit every demographic imaginable. Releases included Britney Spears’ In the Zone, Blink-182′s self-titled fifth studio album, Timbaland & Magoo’s Under Construction, Part II, Christmas albums from Whitey Houston and Ashanti, compilations from Michael Jackson, Moby and Joe Satriani, and live albums/DVDs from Dave Matthews Band and Linkin Park.

Following the pattern of Thanksgiving week album releases, November 22, 2004 began another big week. Two “American Idol” winners, Fantasia and Ruben Studdard went head-to-head with Free Yourself and I Need an Angel, respectively. The shelves were also packed with U2′s How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, Gwen Stefani’s solo debut Love. Angel. Music. Baby., as well as other releases from Creed, Anthrax, Evanescence, Nirvana and Jessica Simpson.

September 12, 2006 was the drop date of Justin Timberlake’s second solo album, FutureSex/LoveSounds, which produced five smash hit singles. That week John Mayer’s Continuum and Bob Seger’s Face the Promise were released, and both eventually went platinum. Other albums and compilations came from the Mars Volta, Papa Roach, Lionel Richie, Veruca Salt, Everclear, and the Barenaked Ladies.

On September 11, 2007 after threatening to retire from music if his album Curtis was outsold, 50 Cent came in second to Kanye West’s Graduation. And though he wasn’t included in the 50 Cent Challenge, Kenny Chesney’s Just Who I Am: Pirates and Poets was released the same day and sold very well. The date also marked the release of Animal Collective’s Strawberry Jam, which didn’t exactly pose a threat.

One of the wildest weeks of 2009′s album drop calendar was easily that of November 16. Lady Gaga’s The Fame Monster, Justin Bieber’s My World, Leona Lewis’ Echo, OneRepublic’s Waking Up, Kris Allen’s self-titled debut, Norah Jones’ The Fall, and compilations from both Janet Jackson and Fall Out Boy were some of the new additions to the music scene.

Alicia Keys has proven to be as selfless in real life as she is in song.

The singer held her 8th annual Keep a Child Alive Black Ball event in New York on Thursday night. The fundraiser brought out Jay-Z, Beyoncé, Usher, Jay Sean, Janelle Monae, Jennifer Hudson, Whitney Houston and more.

Jay-Z and Keys’ husband, Swizz Beatz, performed “On to the Next One,” and Jay later performed “Empire State of Mind.” Monae also hit the stage, as did Keys and Sade, who performed a duet, “Love Is Stronger Than Pride.”

“It’s my heart and soul,” Keys told MTV News about the organization she co-founded. “Since the beginning, we’ve been very driven to do incredible work. I’m proud to show what four to five women who are very dedicated can do.”

The organization benefits children and families who have been affected by AIDS but can’t afford to purchase medicine; the event reportedly helped raise $2.4 million.

This year, Keep a Child Alive introduced the “Buy Life” T-shirt. The shirt features a large barcode on the garment; donors can buy the shirt and scan the code with their smart phones to make a donation to the charity. Every time the code is scanned by a phone, a donation goes through. Ryan Seacrest, Kim Kardashian and Katie Holmes are among the celebrity spokespeople appearing in ads for the shirt.

“It’s like a dream to me to be among these people singing and performing, and opening people’s eyes to what Keep a Child Alive can do,” Keys said.

Jessica Simpson, Mandy Moore and Rihanna are all planning on becoming moms — but only when the time is right! In three separate interviews this week, the pop stars all expressed their desire to have kids in the not-too-distant future.

Jessica Simpson, 30, tells Access Hollywood that she can "definitely see myself having a family" with new fiance Eric Johnson, but that they "really haven’t talked much about it" yet.

Mandy Moore, 26 — who lends her voice to the princess in the new Disney film Tangled — tells E! that she "will definitely have a family" with rocker husband Ryan Adams.

Rihanna, 22, has been dating Dodgers player Matt Kemp since January, and she tells Interview Magazine that she’ll have a baby whenever it feels right: "It could be a year from now. It could be ten years from now."

Why all the talk about babies this week? Maybe it has something to do with fellow pop princess Pink, 31, announcing that she and hubby Carey Hart are expecting. What’s cool, though, is that all these musicians plan to have babies — but none of them feel pressured to choose between baby and career. That must be a sign of progress, right?

Those three ladies would do well to take a cue from Pink, who’s already got a plan in motion: she tells the Associated Press that "as soon as the baby can say ‘mama,’ I’m going on the road. We are going to be a traveling family gypsy band with garlands in our hair." Sounds like a pretty amazing childhood to us!

‘You know what? Bieber’s doing his thing,’ ‘Jersey Shore’ star tells MTV News.

After Justin Bieber took home four trophies at the American Music Awards, including Artist of the Year, it was pretty clear that the music industry had caught Bieber Fever. And when MTV News caught up with some of the night’s winners, nominees and attendees they all admitted that Bieber is the hottest guy in the game right now.

“I just think it’s just insane kids are just Justin Bieber in-fevered,” Taio Cruz joked to MTV News on the AMA red carpet. “And they love him, but they love us all, though.”

Producer and songwriter Sean Garrett said Bieber is winning the guys over because he’s won so many of the ladies over. “He just kind of came out of nowhere,” Garrett said of Bieber. “He’s excited. He’s the youngest in charge, and he’s definitely got the ladies.”

Muse drummer Dom Howard confessed that, while Bieber is not a boy, not yet a man, he’s still got that something. “Tonight he’s won all the awards even though he’s not quite a man yet,” Howard said. “Boy of the year!”

Similarly, “Jersey Shore” star Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino said Bieber was the highlight of the show, thanks to his performance of “Pray.” “You know what? Bieber’s doing his thing,” Sitch said.

For crooner Michael Bublé, it was about who was selling more — which he says is probably the both of them. “I’m better than everyone else, and also I’m humble and good-looking and smart and rich and humble, but really humble,” he joked. “I don’t know [who sells more]. I think it’s probably pretty close.”

The King is back!

Usher thrilled the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night with his stunning combination performance of “OMG” and “DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love.”

The singer moved and grooved, proving that he’s the R&B star that everyone pays attention to for the big moments.

After a lukewarm reception to his previous album, the singer busted back onto the charts and radio with his latest set, Raymond v. Raymond, and he’s been proving doubters wrong since its release.

“We all sat in a room and came up with a concept for the stage, and then we took that concept to Usher,” VMA executive producer Dave Sirulnick told MTV News about the star’s setup. “We said to him, ‘We want to do the best televised dance routine that you’ve done in years. Let’s show why you’re the king.’ ”

Usher handily delivered.

Durng his rehearsals he was as focused as Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant on the eve of game seven for the championship.

His choreographer led the way with Usher’s backup dancers while the “OMG” star looked on intently; he only jumped in a handful of times, instead choosing to harness his energy for Sunday night’s big show.

The crooner has ruled the charts in the past with a mix of uptempo grooves and slow-burning ballads.

But Usher has reinvented himself this year with the will.i.am dance tune “OMG” and his latest single, “DJ Got Us Falling in Love.”

Usher plays to win, and after his stirring performance it’s clear that the crown still rests securely on his head.

Getting an early start to the day with morning travels, Bethenny Frankel was spotted loading her family into their SUV en route to the airport in New York City on Saturday (November 27).

Headed to tape “Skating with the Stars” on the west coast, the former “Real Housewives” star looked a bit worn down as she showed off her makeupless looks while joined by husband Jason Hoppy, baby daughter Bryn and pet pooch Cookie.

Talking with E! about joining the new ABC competition series, Bethenny dished, “Without a doubt, I’m doing this for women who are afraid to try things and don’t take chances. I was truly terrified to do this, all arrows pointed to no, but I decided to fight that and said ‘I’m scared, but I’m going to do it,’ and that’s what a woman needs to do.”

As for garnering the second to lowest point total during week one of the program, Miss Frankel said, “What am I supposed to do?be upset that I’m not Peggy Fleming?! We don’t take ourselves very seriously. We had a great time. I put my all into it, and that’s all I wanted?to not fall, get through the routine and have fun, that’s what it’s all about.”

Coldplay’s new British stamps

On Thursday (January 7), the U.K.’s Royal Mail unveiled a series of 10 new stamps, honoring the most iconic album covers of the past 40 years.

The albums featured in the new series are the Rolling Stones‘ Let It Bleed, Led Zeppelin‘s IV, David Bowie‘s The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars, Mike Oldfield‘s Tubular Bells, The Clash‘s London Calling, New Order‘s Power, Corruption and Lies, Primal Scream‘s Screamadelica, Pink Floyd‘s The Division Bell, Blur‘s Parklife and — the most recent album on to make the cut — Coldplay‘s A Rush of Blood to the Head.

Meant to honor “the most potent graphic images of modern times, many of which have provided a visual soundtrack to people’s lives,” the series is the end result of a lengthy research process by the Royal Mail, who looked through thousands of album covers by British artists before deciding on the final list. And, during a Wednesday night BBC Radio broadcast, it was revealed that the queen herself actually approved each design.

Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page — who helped design the cover for IV — was on hand to celebrate the release of the stamps and recalled the mysterious nature of the album’s iconic imagery.

“Almost 40 years after the album came out, nobody knows the old man who featured on the cover, nor the artist who painted him,” he said. “That sort of sums up what we wanted to achieve with the album cover, which has remained both anonymous and enigmatic at the same time.”

Of course, any great honor is befitting of an equally great contest, so, on the same day the stamps were made available to the general public, Coldplay decided to give one of their Rush of Blood stamps away. In a message on their official site, the band held a contest to send one lucky fan “a letter using a Coldplay stamp, postmarked with today’s issue date.”

“We visited our local post office earlier today and bought some of the Coldplay stamps,” the message read. “Very nice they are too.”

For the Cher fans out there old enough to remember her famous “Turn Back Time” outfit, the fact that the 64-year-old is still able to rock the heck out of that very small piece of fabric stood out as one of the highlights of this year’s Video Music Awards.

When MTV News caught up with the legendary diva while she promoted her new movie “Burlesque,” we had to ask what inspired her attire that night.

“Well, I wear that every night in Las Vegas, so I just whipped it out. I didn’t have time to think of, like, getting a costume,” she explained. “So I had it and thought it would just be fun to just take off on myself, not knowing I was going to be handling the meat purse,” she said, referring to Lady Gaga’s now-famous meat dress and accessory. “But, you know, there’s those moments you just remember [forever],” she said with a chuckle. ” ‘Here, Cher, will you hold my meat purse?’ ”

For someone who has been in the business for so long, Cher is very down-to-earth about her fame — no matter how big the freak-outs of fans (and a few journalists we watched try to contain their excitement at the “Burlesque” press day). We asked what it feels like to experience such unbridled enthusiasm and love from her fans.

“You know, I would tell you the truth, and it’s going to sound so awful, but I’m kind of used to it,” she said. “I’ve been around so long. This guy said, ‘My grandmother loves you.’ If somebody’s grandmother loves you, they’ve known you for a long time,” she said, adding that the fans who have known her via a grandmother or mother have more of a history with her, which translates into being totally starstruck.

‘It upped my sales,’ she tells ‘The View’ after her perfume ad was banned in the U.K.

Beyoncé caused a bit of controversy last week with her red-hot commercial for her latest fragrance, Heat. The ad was banned from daytime rotation in the U.K. thanks to its steamy images of Beyoncé. When the singer and her mom, Tina Knowles, stopped by “The View” on Monday (November 22), she seemed happy about the outcome.

“I think it was very good, because a lot of people went and watched the commercial,” she said. “And it upped my sales.”

Beyoncé not only had a good-natured laugh about the response to her ad, but she also poked fun at her ever-present wind machine, explaining why she seems to always have one on hand during her performances. “Where’s the wind coming from? It started out only [to stay cool], and then it kind of created this effect with my hair,” she explained. “You can only imagine, the show is two and a half hours. It’s really, really warm onstage.”

While B didn’t dish about life with her hubby, Jay-Z, she did reveal that she’s a bit messy at home, despite being so together when she hits the red carpet. “Well, I think because I work really hard,” she said. “When I’m home, I don’t want to think about it.”

Beyoncé seemed a bit more comfortable when it came to giving a shout-out to Jay-Z for making an appearance on her concert special, “I Am … World Tour,” which premieres on Thursday night at 9:30 p.m. ET on ABC. She recounted how Hova surprised the audience by joining her onstage in Rio de Janeiro. “We talked about it; we knew he was in town,” she said. “Kanye, as well. He was in town that night.”

‘Just wait, she’s going to say something amazing,’ Jake Gyllenhaal gushes about Anne Hathaway during MTV News interview.

Much of the advance buzz about Anne Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhaal’s “Love and Other Drugs” has centered on the film’s nudity — the co-stars bare some serious skin in a few key moments — but the actors’ chemistry is another important element in the movie.

Actors will typically declare how well the cast and crew got along on set when promoting a movie, whether it’s true or not. But in the case of Hathaway and Gyllenhaal, it seemed obvious the two share a genuine mutual affection, as MTV News learned when we caught up with them to discuss their romantic comedy, which opens Wednesday. Since Hathaway and Gyllenhaal have collaborated onscreen before, we asked what it was like to do press together.

“[She's] annoying,” Gyllenhaal joked about having to sit side-by-side for interviews all day. Then, turning serious, he added, “She’s so dope at press. Can we talk about this for a second? She’s got a rare talent at ‘pressing’ it.”

“How dare you set me up at the beginning of an interview like that?” Hathaway interjected in mock protest. “How dare you!”

“Your mind is going to be blown by this chick,” Gyllenhaal continued.

“Wait, he’s about to say the smartest thing you’ve ever heard!” Hathaway countered.

“No, just wait, she’s going to say something amazing and you’re going to be moved, you’re going to cry,” Gyllenhaal enthused. “There’s going to be something you’ve never felt before.”

The onetime “Brokeback Mountain” co-stars then began talking over each other, spouting off various compliments.

“No, Jake’s great. Jake’s awesome,” Hathaway said as Gyllenhaal echoed the warm fuzzy sentiments.

“She’s so talented. She’s at the top of her game. Everything about her is so special,” he said.

“It’s so nice to know that someone really has your back,” she said.

“She’s so beautiful right now,” he said, which got Hathaway’s attention.

“Oh, thank you,” she said, turning to her co-star. “I think you’re just really handsome!”

“Her body is gorgeous in the film,” Gyllenhaal continued.

“Well, that’s too far,” Hathaway said.

Call it what you will: talent, swag, skills. But one thing’s true about Usher Terry Raymond IV: When he steps on the dance floor, some mysterious thing comes out of him and puts the G in groove. After he was tapped to perform at the 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards, executive producer Dave Sirulnick challenged Usher to “show why you’re king,” and the 31-year-old Grammy winner didn’t disappoint.

As predicted by the lucky few who got a peek at Thursday’s practice performance for his hit “OMG,” Ush pulled off moves that would make the late great Michael Jackson jealous in a mammoth stage production that included more special-effects bells and whistles than a summer blockbuster.

Usher opened the performance with “DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love,” perched two flights above the stage on a ledge surrounded by blinding green laser lights. Then he slid, with the help of barely visible wires and mounts, down a flight, all the while popping and locking. When the father of two finally ticked his way down to stage level, he was surrounded by an army of dancers also clad in black suits with white stripes designed to toss and catch special effect lights.

Directed by Anthony Mandler, Usher’s “OMG” clip earned Best Male Video, Best Dance Music Video and Best Choreography Moonman nominations. During the pre-show, Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” beat it in the Best Dance category, where Raymond was, for many, the lead contender.

If Usher was disappointed, he didn’t let it show. When he launched the “OMG” portion of his performance, the stage seemed to disappear, as red laser lights moved forward in blinding configurations spelling out O.M.G. and Usher’s name. More dancers lowered from the ceiling on Cirque du Soleil-esque contraptions, dipping in and out of the red beams. Such a 3-D light display could probably have been seen from the moon, if it weren’t for the roof of the Nokia Theatre.

Usher ended his set standing, head back, with his arms outstretched in the Jesus pose. He didn’t say a word. Didn’t need to.

Recently Beyoncé revealed that she wants to make her “own genre of music” for her next album. So when MTV News caught up with the singer at the New York screening of her concert special, “I Am … World Tour,” we asked her to clarify what exactly it is that she’s creating in the studio.

“Well, I wouldn’t say I’m inventing a new genre,” she said. “I’m mixing every type of genre that I love and I’m inspired by every type of genre.”

Beyoncé went on to say that people should throw any preconceived notions about the follow-up to 2008′s I Am … Sasha Fierce out the window. “I’m not in a box,” she said. “It’s not R&B. It’s not typically pop. It’s not rock. It’s just everything I love all mixed together in my own little gumbo of music.”

The singer says that quite a motley crew of musicians have inspired the album. “Definitely Fela Kuti, the Stylistics. How random, right?” she laughed. “So many people … Lauryn Hill, Stevie Wonder, of course, Michael Jackson’s Off the Wall … all of those things I’m kind of mixing together.”

For the album, Beyoncé has been hitting the studio with many of her usual collaborators including Ne-Yo, Sean Garrett and Jim Jonsin. And her mom, Tina Knowles, has given the tracks she’s heard so far her seal of approval, saying, “Of course [I heard it]. It’s amazing. It’s so amazing!”

In October, Justin Bieber debuted the first trailer for his February 3-D flick “Never Say Never.” And on Monday (November 22), just one day after his big night at the AMAs, a new trailer for the flick hit the Internet.

The sneak peek opens with classical music playing as the screen reads, “This Valentine’s Day,” over an image of Bieber. Soon, the singer is spraying silly string as the screen reads, “See Bieber like never before.” Then, Bieber throws popcorn at the camera — all tricks to play up the film being in 3-D.

Soon, a montage of Bieber as a kid flashes across the screen along with concert video and behind-the-scenes footage of the singer with various people in Bieber’s camp sharing tidbits about the singer, including “He could really be huge, if he wanted” and “He’s 16, and he’s doing it all on his own.”

At the end of the trailer, Bieber is seen learning about the cameras used to shoot his 3-D flick as he sticks out 3-D glasses and looks into a screen seeing what the 3-D will look like. “That’s sick, right?” he says. “It looks like it’s about to hit that guy in the head.”

It was just announced that fans can catch a sneak-peek screening of the film February 9, two days before it officially hits theaters. They’ll be surprised just to see I’m a regular person,” he said. “I’m a regular teenage boy. I like girls, and I like to hang out with my friends. It’s gonna be taking them into my world, but also like it’s their world, ’cause it’s just normal.”

Making a post-Thanksgiving press stop, Justin Bieber checked in at NBC studios in New York City on Friday morning (November 26).

The “Baby” hitmaker looked his usual handsome self as he sat down to talk about his just released acoustic album, as well as his 3-D movie efforts.

First asked about his thoughts upon sweeping last weekend’s American Music Awards, Justin replied, “A lot of things were running through my head, it was pretty amazing, what I have accomplished this year and I’ve just been very, very blessed.”

Then chatting about his acoustical B album out today, Bieber said, “I basically just wanted a new album for my fans this holiday season. It’s only available at Wal-Mart and if you don’t have a Wal-Mart in your city you can go online and get it.”

Of his #-D movie effort, the 16-year-old dished that fans can expect “a lot of behind the scenes stuff, like it’s going to take you back to my hometown where I grew up and places I hung out and just lots of cool things.”

On Thursday (January 7), the U.K.’s Royal Mail unveiled a series of 10 new stamps, honoring the most iconic album covers of the past 40 years.

The albums featured in the new series are the Rolling Stones‘ Let It Bleed, Led Zeppelin‘s IV, David Bowie‘s The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars, Mike Oldfield‘s Tubular Bells, The Clash‘s London Calling, New Order‘s Power, Corruption and Lies, Primal Scream‘s Screamadelica, Pink Floyd‘s The Division Bell, Blur‘s Parklife and — the most recent album on to make the cut — Coldplay‘s A Rush of Blood to the Head.

Meant to honor “the most potent graphic images of modern times, many of which have provided a visual soundtrack to people’s lives,” the series is the end result of a lengthy research process by the Royal Mail, who looked through thousands of album covers by British artists before deciding on the final list. And, during a Wednesday night BBC Radio broadcast, it was revealed that the queen herself actually approved each design.

Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page — who helped design the cover for IV — was on hand to celebrate the release of the stamps and recalled the mysterious nature of the album’s iconic imagery.

“Almost 40 years after the album came out, nobody knows the old man who featured on the cover, nor the artist who painted him,” he said. “That sort of sums up what we wanted to achieve with the album cover, which has remained both anonymous and enigmatic at the same time.”

Of course, any great honor is befitting of an equally great contest, so, on the same day the stamps were made available to the general public, Coldplay decided to give one of their Rush of Blood stamps away. In a message on their official site, the band held a contest to send one lucky fan “a letter using a Coldplay stamp, postmarked with today’s issue date.”

“We visited our local post office earlier today and bought some of the Coldplay stamps,” the message read. “Very nice they are too.”

The 2010 American Music Awards dished out hardware to many of pop, R&B and country music’s biggest names. Like most high-profile awards shows, there were showstopping performances, off-the-runway fashion and emotional moments. Unlike most trophy fests, the AMA winners aren’t determined by the inner circle of music-industry professionals, but rather the fans who plunk down cash for hit records.

This year, fans handed over pyramids to the artists who also cranked out many of the biggest hits. Justin Bieber made off with the most AMA booty, nabbing four trophies. Taylor Swift, Rihanna, the Black Eyed Peas, Eminem and Bieber’s mentor Usher also snagged AMA loot.

‘Here, Cher, will you hold my meat purse?’ singer/actress remembers Gaga asking onstage.

For the Cher fans out there old enough to remember her famous “Turn Back Time” outfit, the fact that the 64-year-old is still able to rock the heck out of that very small piece of fabric stood out as one of the highlights of this year’s Video Music Awards.

When MTV News caught up with the legendary diva while she promoted her new movie “Burlesque,” we had to ask what inspired her attire that night.

“Well, I wear that every night in Las Vegas, so I just whipped it out. I didn’t have time to think of, like, getting a costume,” she explained. “So I had it and thought it would just be fun to just take off on myself, not knowing I was going to be handling the meat purse,” she said, referring to Lady Gaga’s now-famous meat dress and accessory. “But, you know, there’s those moments you just remember [forever],” she said with a chuckle. ” ‘Here, Cher, will you hold my meat purse?’ ”

For someone who has been in the business for so long, Cher is very down-to-earth about her fame — no matter how big the freak-outs of fans (and a few journalists we watched try to contain their excitement at the “Burlesque” press day). We asked what it feels like to experience such unbridled enthusiasm and love from her fans.

“You know, I would tell you the truth, and it’s going to sound so awful, but I’m kind of used to it,” she said. “I’ve been around so long. This guy said, ‘My grandmother loves you.’ If somebody’s grandmother loves you, they’ve known you for a long time,” she said, adding that the fans who have known her via a grandmother or mother have more of a history with her, which translates into being totally starstruck.

In 2010 alone, Beyoncé was pregnant at least twice, if you believe the rumors.

While the singer shot down the talk both times, she says that at this point she’s pretty much to used to people speculating about potential baby bumps. “I mean, it’s a part of it. At this point they said I’ve been pregnant like eight times, so I’m kind of used to it,” Beyoncé told MTV News at a screening for her concert DVD, “I Am … World Tour,” in New York City.

“I just hope that one day, when I decide to be pregnant that people are happy for me, ’cause I’m like gosh, like, everyone’s like, ‘Oh god, please! She’s been pregnant 100 times.’ One day, hopefully, I will be. So whatever; it’s a part of being a celebrity, I guess.”

Her mom, Tina Knowles, was also at the screening and when asked if she thought that 2011 might be the year we give up gossiping about Bey’s pregnancy status, she played it cool. “You have to ask her those personal things,” she said. “I don’t know!”

But Tina was also the lady to shoot down the baby-bump rumors last month when she sat down with talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres.

“I heard that, but I’m here to clear the rumors up. The truth is it’s not Beyoncé that’s pregnant, it’s me,” she joked. “No, it’s not true. Not right now. I’m looking forward to it. With all the rumors, by now I should have about five or six grandchildren.”

“Michael Jackson’s new album and the new releases, of course, there’s been comments about whether or not [it] should actually be released or whether it would reflect his true authenticity, but naturally because of the fact he’s not here to see it through, it definitely wouldn’t reflect what he had in mind for it because there’s other minds working for him,” Akon told MTV News about the tracks. “But I think at the end of the day, we have two choices: We can put out the little that we do have to hold onto, or we can just never ever put it out again. … The material that he did have that was finished, he would have loved to put it out.

“[The songs] were created by him, now whether or not they were finished by him is a different story,” he added. “And that’s just a collective effort of all of us. It’s a double-edged sword.”

Akon points out that one of those finished tracks is “Hold My Hand,” making the argument that his contribution to the album is Jackson-approved.

“If he was here today, I think he would definitely approve of ‘Hold My Hand,’ because it was already preapproved,” he said. “But the rest of the songs, I’m not quite sure how far those songs went ’cause Michael’s a perfectionist. He wouldn’t let anything go unfinished. Me knowing him from my standpoint of viewing him, I’m not quite sure, because he won’t stop; he will go and go until there’s not one doubt left in his mind that this record is perfect.

“So, I hope he would [have approved of the album], then again, you never know. He’s the only one that can answer that question.”

He’s known as one of the smoothest R&B sensations to grace the stage, but when Usher was 17, he grappled with a far less flattering image.

“I went through this phase where I had really, really bad acne,” the singer admits on the latest episode of “When I Was 17,” premiering Saturday at 11 a.m. Usher, who was 17 in 1995, reveals with a grin that his nickname was “Pizza Face.”

“His acne was so horrible,” recalled one of Usher’s more blunt friends, Keith. “His face was so jacked up.”

Music mogul and producer Jermaine Dupri remembered how the entertainer’s spotty complexion led him to shy away from the spotlight.

“He didn’t want to go out. He wanted to stay in,” Dupri says. “He was a little ashamed of what was going on with his face.”

The singer went to extreme, and ultimately unsuccessful, lengths to disguise his breakouts.

“As a dude, you’re not gonna put makeup on your face, right?” Usher said. “I tried that, it didn’t even work.”

He may have experimented with cosmetics and spent a few more nights at home but the multiplatinum star didn’t let his acne hold him back from wooing the ladies. “I was 17, so I would still try to talk to girls [and] get past it,” Usher reasoned.

He even had some smooth lines to drop when he wanted to draw attention away from his skin. ” ‘Don’t look at that, look at my eyes, baby. I’m trying to say something real serious to you right here,’ ” Usher recalled, reenacting his complexion-deflecting dating moves. “I know I have pizza face, I don’t care.”

In the end, his skin cleared up and the singer said it was just a matter of riding out a rite passage that many teens are forced to endure.

“This is something that all 17-year-olds have to deal with,” Usher said. “You can’t run away from it.”

Earlier this year, Akon teased that Lady Gaga was working on “crazy” new tracks for her forthcoming Born This Way album. Now, Gaga’s label boss has a few more details to share about the hotly anticipated LP, due in 2011.

“Well, Gaga and her follow-up, I’ve definitely heard [it], and what I can really tell you about it is the fact that I’m excited — and I’m hard to excite,” he laughed to MTV News about the release. “I’m really hard to excite, ’cause my big question was like, ‘Wow, how are you going to outdo yourself on this one? Do you realize how big you are? Do you know how big you really are? How are you going to outdo yourself?’ ”

Akon has no real worries about how Gaga will top herself since she’s managed to do it so many times already, sonically and visually. “She’s very creative. She will always find a way, always,” he said. “Honestly, I think these are just appetizers as to what’s to come, because what’s to come, if you haven’t been following her up to this point, you’re going to get completely lost. Like, she is amazing when it comes to just taking things to the next level, [and] from what I’ve heard so far, I think she’s going to be all right.”

With tracks like “Telephone,” “Bad Romance” and “Paparazzi” under her belt, Akon wants her fans to know that things are about to get even more epic on this new album. While he didn’t say whether the album would have any Beyoncé-like collabos, he did say “maybe” when asked if he might appear on it.

“If I was going to compare it to her previous work, I would definitely say it’s a notch up,” he said. “It’s like she’s slowly taking you on to this journey down this road. If she were to just drastically do it, she probably would have lost everybody from the first album, but once the sound was created and established, now we can use that as a tool to grab all the monsters and walk them down this graveyard. It’s crazy. It’s amazing.”

‘We’re working on stuff for fun,’ singer say of upcoming mixtape with teen rapper.

Justin Bieber has been known to dabble in the world of rap. Not only does he perform the rap portion of “Baby” when he sings the song live — since Ludacris isn’t always available to hit the stage with the singer — he even dropped a rap song this fall under the rap pseudonym Shawty Mane in which he raps over Vado and Cam’ron’s “Speaking in Tungs.”

Now fans are waiting for what Bieber and Young Money MC Lil Twist will share with the world on their mixtape, some of which Lil Twist teased might drop very soon. When MTV News caught up with Bieber on Sunday at the American Music Awards, he said he had no further details to share about the collaboration. “I don’t know man,” he said, with a smile on his face. “Lil Twist is my homey and we’re working on stuff for fun.”

Of course, even if the mixtape never sees the light of day, Bieber has plenty of projects already under way, including the releases of My Worlds Acoustic this Friday and his 3-D movie, “Never Say Never,” next year. “I think this is only the beginning,” he said. “There’s so much more to come and I just hope that I have the career that Usher, my mentor, has had.”

It’s a sentiment that Usher shares. “There’s so much more in store for the future, or at least there’s a ton of things we can do and will,” he said. “And with the support of his fans, who will continue to just grow and grow and grow.”

Song featuring Akon is first single off posthumous album Michael.

“Hold My Hand,” the official first single from the upcoming posthumous album from Michael Jackson album, was released on MJ’s official website over the weekend. The lead track from Michael, due on December 14, is a universal plea for peace on which Akon and MJ weave their voices together over a wash of dramatic strings and a subdued beat.

Akon, who recently went back into the studio to put finishing touches on the song, spoke to MTV News back in 2007 about working with the King of Pop, who reportedly wrote a hand-written note in which he expressed a desire to have “Hold My Hand” released as a single.

“Just to be in the same room [with him], I felt like everything I wanted to achieve in life had already been achieved,” Akon said. “That’s how incredible that aura [is].”

Unlike “Breaking News,” the beat-heavy anti-media screed that was streamed on the MJ site last week, the uplifting “Hold My Hand” is one of Jackson’s classic love ballads, a heart-stirring call to unity with a touch of a Caribbean lilt.

“This life don’t last forever,” Jackson sings in the opening lines in his signature quavering falsetto. “So tell me what we’re waiting for/ We’re better off being together/ Than being miserable alone.”

Then together, the men sing, ” ‘Cause I been there before and you’ve bee there before/ But together we can be all right/ ‘Cause when it gets dark and when it gets cold we hold each other till we see the sunlight.”

As the three-and-a-half-minute single comes to a close, the strings swell and a gospel choir comes in, clapping hands and giving the tune a majestic feel.

The 10-track album will also feature cameos from 50 Cent (“Monster”) and Lenny Kravitz (“(I Can’t Make It) Another Day”.

Even though he worked with Jackson on tracks late in the singer’s career on what was slated to be MJ’s comeback album, one person who is not excited about the new MJ disc is the Black Eyed Peas’ will.i.am.

“Whoever put it out and is profiting off of it, I want to see how cold they are,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “To say that what [Michael] contributed during his life wasn’t enough. He just wasn’t any ordinary artist. He was a hands-on person. To me it’s disrespectful. There’s no honoring.”

Considering how meticulous and particular Jackson was about his music, Will said he thought it was callous of Jackson’s label, Sony Music, to release what he suspects are unfinished works. “Michael Jackson songs are finished when Michael says they’re finished,” said Will, who earlier this year revealed that he worked on the songs “Dreaming” and “Still the King” with Jackson, as well a tribute to James Brown called “I Will Miss You.”

“Maybe if I never worked with him I wouldn’t have this perspective,” the producer told “Access Hollywood,” noting that those songs will never be released because MJ didn’t give his final approval on them. “He was very particular about how he wanted his vocals, the reverb he used. … He was that hands-on. … He kept his vocals and I kept the music. We had that understanding.”

We revisit all of the magic that went into creating the first of the ‘Harry Potter’ series’ two-part finale.

After the first five films in the franchise cast a combined $4.5 billion spell on the movie-going public, it was inevitable: “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” J.K. Rowling’s final, 759-page book in the boy-wizard series, was going to be split into two separate movies.

” ‘The Deathly Hallows’ is so rich, the story so dense and there is so much that is resolved that after discussing it with [Rowling], we came to the conclusion that two parts were needed to do it justice,” producer David Heyman said in a statement explaining the move at the time.

The announcement came in March 2008, well before “Half-Blood Prince” added a cool $934 million to that already gargantuan total. Good call, Warner Bros.! Now, part one of “Deathly Hallows” is upon us, and MTV News has got coverage of the flick stretching back to when the one-into-two-movies decision became public. Before you hop on your broomstick and swoop into the multiplex — or, you know, just take a car — check out everything there is to know about “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1.”

The Split
OK, so we knew the book would be divided into two movies, but the big question was where the first movie would end and the second begin. We put that query to Emma Watson, a.k.a. Hermione Granger, in ’08.

“I don’t know,” she admitted. “I am as intrigued as you are. I am waiting at the moment to receive the script. It’s a tough call. I’m sure it will be some cruel cliffhanger.”

Right. Later, director David Yates dropped us a hint about the split. “We’ve had three or four different ideas about where to cut off the seventh film,” he said. “Traditionally, the movies have ended with a death or a bereavement, some sort of passage or arrival. This time we think we will end with more a cliffhanger.”

For a while, there was a rumor that “Part 1″ would indeed end with a cliffhanger: Harry and his friends would be captured and brought to Malfoy Manor, but that didn’t turn out to be true. The film, it turned out, would end when Voldemort gains control of the Elder Wand, one of the three Deathly Hallows that allow the holder to conquer death. And that, we learned after a recent screening, is exactly when the credits roll.

The 3-D
As “Avatar” made its record-breaking climb to box-office immortality, Warner Bros. announced that “Deathly Hallows” would be getting a post-production conversion to 3-D.

” ‘Harry Potter’ is already an epic film, but having that added dimension will make it even more epic, and that seemed like an opportunity that was too hard to pass up,” producer Heyman told us in March of this year.

By that point, though, the conversion process still hadn’t been started. Would it be finished in time? And would the 3-D be high-quality enough to please fans jaded by substandard three-dimensional fare like “Clash of the Titans”? Apparently not. The studio announced in October that it was canceling 3-D for “Part 1.” “We do not want to disappoint fans who have long anticipated the conclusion of this extraordinary journey,” Warner Bros. said in a statement.

Staring Into the ‘Hallows’
The shoot got started in early ’09, and months before production wrapped, we’d already received our first official look at the film. It was rather uninspiring, a simple photo of Hermione, Ron (Rupert Grint), and Harry (Daniel Radcliffe). Eh. Thankfully, subsequent peeks at the flick more than fulfilled expectations.

Look, there’s Harry with his trusty wand. There’s the first trailer, with a Voldemort vs. Harry throwdown and a peek at footage from ‘Part 2.’ And a snap of Harry riding shotgun with Hagrid. And a final, high-intensity, super-dark trailer.

As Rufus Scrimgeour says, “These are dark times, this is no denying.”

What the Kids Have to Say About ‘Potter’
The fun kicked off in London last week during the London red-carpet premiere, the boys looking spiffy in their ties and the girls all glam in their haute couture. MTV News traveled across the pond for some one-on-one time with the cast. Both Watson and Radcliffe had some funny stuff to say about their surprising onscreen smooch.

“It was only the day before that they said, ‘Oh, by the way, we hope it’s all right, but we want you to be topless, and we’re going to cover you in silver paint,’ ” Watson told us. “It was awkward enough as it was without the silver paint and the strapless bra, but whatever. It works. It looks good for the story.”

Said Radcliffe, “I thought it was going to be a kind of a slow, sensual thing, and Emma really went for it.”

We flew back to New York for another red-carpet premiere, just days before Friday’s (November 19) release.

“It’s sad, absolutely,” Radcliffe said about the series coming to an end. “[But] we’re going out on a high note. To sustain this level of quality for 10 years is a very rare thing in a big franchise. I think it’s us and ‘Toy Story,’ to be honest. I think we’ve done amazingly. I’m thrilled.”

The die-hards won’t care what the critics say, but what they’re saying is pretty positive.

When it comes to matters of box-office bucks, a film like “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1″ is pretty much critic-proof. Its opening gross is usually insulated from critics tapping away at keyboards far removed from theaters where fans tote broomsticks and battle with faux-magical wands in the aisles.

Just try keeping those cosplayers at home. But, regardless of critical opinion — which just so happens to be largely positive — “Deathly Hallows” is shaping up to have one of the biggest openings ever. Prognosticators are eyeing a debut in the range of $130 million, good for the top “Potter” opening in franchise history and fifth place on the all-time list. And, as fans rush out to the multiplex in the opening hours in much the same way that Twilighters do, “Part 1″ has a shot at besting “New Moon” and its $72.7 million first-day gross last year.

But should you brave the long lines and the frenetic energy of “Potter” obsessives? Do yourself a favor and check out what the critics are saying before you begin drawing a Harry-esque lightning bolt on your forehead.

The Story

” ‘Deathly Hallows’ is immensely satisfying. Nonetheless, things are gloomier than ever before: Harry, Hermione and Ron (Rupert Grint) are adrift; their anchor, Hogwarts, is no longer a safe haven. ‘I must be the one to kill Harry Potter,’ says the evil Voldemort, at the beginning of the film, setting the stage for the ultimate standoff. Dark forces amass against Harry and his allies, the Order of the Phoenix, who assemble for a thrilling skyborne escape early in the film. The fearless trio invades the Ministry of Magic in amusingly frumpy grown-up disguise, searches for Horcruxes (pieces of Voldemort’s soul, to be used against him), spends a little too much time camping, and leaves you wishing ‘Part II’ were coming next week, not next summer.” — Moira Macdonald, The Seattle Times

What If You Haven’t Read the Books?

“Though I’ve seen all the films, there were times when I had no idea what they were talking about. Indeed, there are times when Hermione has to explain to Harry. My cluelessness didn’t bother me, because the film depends more on mood and character than many of the others, and key actions seem to be alarmingly taking place off-screen.” — Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

The Comparison to Earlier “Potter” Flicks

“Not that ‘Deathly Hallows’ is grim, exactly. But it is, to an unusual and somewhat risky degree, sadder and slower than the earlier films. It is also much less of a showcase (or bank vault, as the case may be) for the middle and senior generations of British actors. Many of the familiar faces show up — including Ralph Fiennes as Voldemort, Helena Bonham Carter as Bellatrix LeStrange, and, of course, Alan Rickman as Severus Snape — but they move along after a scene or two. … The movie, in other words, belongs solidly to Mr. Radcliffe, Mr. Grint and Ms. Watson, who have grown into nimble actors, capable of nuances of feeling that would do their elders proud. One of the great pleasures of this penultimate ‘Potter’ movie is the anticipation of stellar post-’Potter’ careers for all three of them.” — A.O. Scott, The New York Times

The Dissenters

“The decision by David Heyman (who has produced all the films), Steve Kloves (who’s scripted all but one) and David Yates (who will have directed the last four of the eight) to cut the final book into two features — whatever its sense as a business strategy — meant slowing the story down just as it should rev up. Instead of scooting like a Golden Snitch during a Quidditch championship, ‘DH1′ is struck with a long spell of aimlessness, and the viewer with the curse of ennui.” — Richard Corliss, Time

The Final Word

“Ultimately, this movie’s not for Muggles like me — it’s for the millions and millions of Harry Potter fans who, quibbles aside, will welcome its arrival as a blessed event. It’s evidence of how happily critic-proof these movies are that even the Warner Bros. logo — rendered in what looked to be rusting iron — was applauded when it appeared on the screen. After the movie, as the credits began to roll (to Alexandre Desplat’s conventional but nonetheless transporting score), the girl on my left — perhaps 15 or 16 — whispered tearfully to her companion: ‘So good. God, I can’t wait for July.’ That’s all the critical analysis this movie needs.” — Dana Stevens, Slate
